Rhodes - The Fort and Hospital of the Knights of St. John, Greece
Rhodes - The Fort and Hospital of the Knights of St. John, Greece - For over 200 years after the last Crusaders fled the Holy Land, Rhodes was the easternmost outpost of Christendom. The Knights of St. John settled on the island and turned the capital to an almost invincible fortress. "Serve and Fight" was their motto, and under the guise of a papal-sanctioned war against the infidel, their ships plundered the eastern Mediterranean, selling its Muslim garrisons into slavery and at the same time increasing the wealth of their stronghold. Yet, on the other hand, the Knights of St. John also set up the best-organized hospital system of the Middle Ages in the island, and this "service to the Lord" saved the lives of thousands of pilgrims who, sick and exhausted from their exertions in the Holy Land, stopped over there on their way back. Our film takes a ramble through the once impregnable city.
